As Nigerian women joined their colleagues across the world to mark the 2010 International Women’s Day, wife of Rivers State Governor, Dame Judith Amaechi has said that Nigerian Women have the potential to make positive change in the socio-economy development of the country if all barriers against womanhood are removed.
Judith Amaechi in a statement to commemorate the 2010 International Women’s Day and signed by the Media Assistant, Dike Bekwele said women have demonstrated enough will and commitment towards providing solution to the myriad of problem and challenges facing the country.
The Governor’s wife asserted that women have continued to displayed expertise in various assignment entrusted in them in all endeavour.
“Nigerian women, she said, have demonstrated professionalism and expertise in all responsibility entrusted in them, this demonstrates their determination to contribute to the political and economic development of the country.
She added that with full implementation of gender equity and equality, Nigerian women will provide adequate economy road map for the development of the country.
The governor’s wife decried that despite women’s contribution, women still suffer great deprivation and harmful practices, maternal health cases among others describing such situation as worrisome and inimical to national interest.
Mrs Amaechi called on policy makers to consider women as resource necessary for successful implementation and actualization of national objective, including the implementation of Vision 2020 and the Millennium Development Goals 2015.
The founder of Empowerment Support Initiative (ESI) said women have begun to invest in grey areas dominated by their male counterpart including driving the small and medium scale businesses and public transportation to accelerate the growth of the economy.
She disclosed that her NGO will engage 2500 women is the first phase of its agricultural scheme to provide adequate empowerment for them adding that women are set to make a difference in the polity.
