RSG Extends ICT Programme To Naval Schools ... As Amaechi Inspects Naval Facilities

The Rivers State Government is to extend its Information Communication Technology (ICT) programme for Model Primary and Secondary Schools in the state to schools owned by the Nigerian Navy in the state.

Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi who announced this today during an inspection visit to the Nigerian Navy Schools located within the NNS Akaso, Borikiri, as part of his visit to Naval facilities in Port Harcourt, explained that the extension of the facility to the Naval Schools would create an opportunity for Rivers children who attend the schools to also benefit from the computer literacy programme designed for the new schools in Rivers State from the primary level.

According to him, “the State Government has accepted to partner with the Nigerian Navy to increase the number of computers and improve the quality of the ICT education in the schools”.

Addressing officers and men at NNS Pathfinder, Rumuolumeni, the Governor thanked the Navy for its support to the State Government especially for the security of the state-owned water taxis, which had been anchored at the jetty for nearly two years.

The governor lauded the combined effort of the Navy and other security agencies in restoration of sanity to the hitherto challenging security situation in Rivers State, and promised to continue to render any level of assistance to security operatives to enable them sustain effective policing and patrol of the state.

The State Chief Executive, who commended the Navy for maintaining high level of discipline, urged them to sustain the tempo especially by obeying traffic rules and regulations so as not to have any clash with officials of the State Traffic Agency.

He identified some of the problems responsible for traffic jam being experienced in the state capital as construction of new roads, indiscipline on the part of motorists and police road blocks, assuring that the situation would improve when all the roads under construction would have been completed.

The Governor commiserated with the Navy and families of the three officers and one rating who lost their lives in the January 2010 Navy Helicopter crash at Ogbodo, Isiokpo, and promised to support the bereaved families.

He added that the support would be channeled directly to the wives and children of the officers affected in the crash.

Earlier, the Commanding Officer, NNS Pathfinder, Commodore Yusuf Hinna, expressed gratitude to Governor Amaechi for the visit and the State Government for its immense support to the Navy in state, including provision of monthly logistics funds and other items required for patrolling of the waterways.

He attributed 80 per cent of their success to the contributions by the Rivers State Government, and promised that the Navy would continue to leave up to its obligations by protecting the waterways.
